Making jewelry is only partly about technique-a small part. The most rewarding and satisfying part of making anything yourself is the design part. At the beginning of the learning process, a "Monkey See Monkey Do" approach is very important as this the simplest way to teach and to learn. But what happens then?

For me, it should not be a "paint by numbers" approach after you've already learned the techniques. Which would be more satisfying? Endlessly copying someone else's patterns or actually creating your own designs from scratch?

Many might say "But I'm not creative!" but I disagree. Every one of us is creative; it is our very nature as human beings. Discovering how to be creative when you want to be is just another technique and as such can be learned.
